My Soul to Save was an interesting sequel to My Soul to Take for many reasons. One, it shows us how the series will be progressing from now on, two, it showed us a new side to Tod (pretty sure Nash and Kaylee are the same people they were when they came in) and three we got to see more into the Netherworld.
The series has this vibe of being pretty adult while still maintaining everything it needs to remain Young Adult. I like this, because the characters all seem more interesting and not so childish. I guess the whole 'adult' vibe comes from the author being an adult novelist first and foremost (I seem to like when adult novelists turn to YA -Richelle Mead (Vampire Academy, Georgina Kincaid), Sherrilyn Kenyon (Chronicles of Nick, Dark Hunter)... Imagine the possibilities if Jeaniene Frost (Night Huntress Series) turned YA *.*). That affects the character, and it also affects the plot. How The Soul Screamers series seem to be going it's going to be one adventure after the other with no 'one' clear path easily sketched. The future of the series could go anywhere the author wishes. Good because it keeps us on our toes, bad because sometimes I just like to read with a definite goal in mind.
Tod. Oh Tod. You were a little shit, for what you almost did. But, somehow, I still forgive you. Because I know why you did it. I know what was going on in that little head of yours, and it was all mostly good intentions. Tod is just a complicated character all around. You want to read about Tod, because sometimes he does some things you might not necessary like, but you still want to forgive him and see him do better. Nash on the other hand didn't seem to grow (lost a few cool points with me when he wasn't on board with helping the girl recover her soul) much, he is just the same know-it-all horny dude of the first book. He has his moments true (there was this particular scene where he spoke more than his few share of words and was angry as all hell where I looked at him and went 'there's where your balls went!') but they aren't enough to make me switch teams.
The Netherworld. Kaylee is taking Banshee classes with Nash and Tod's mother (yeah if you have read the first book then you already know they are brothers) that will potentially help her control her scream and accidentally the mother lets slip how to get into the Netherworld. The whole mechanics are a little boring, but once you get there? Oh lordie, the grass would be able to kill you. That's how hardcore the place seems to be, nature is even out to get you. The thing that keeps amazing me is how Kaylee is still alive. She keeps being my favourite (she has spunk) but her powers? Other than being a bridge between here and there they are pretty much worthless. The only thing that has kept her head above water is being a VERY clever girl. The powers are there to help her get to her goal, but everything else is inside her brain. She can think under stress and come up with the most clever plans (that one one else seems to think of, idiots).
All in all, great sequel. It is still missing that thing it needs for me to give it 5 stars, but it is a solid 4. I have the third book, and will start reading it as soon as humanly possible.
